1. Do I have to pay a fee to start a generationOn Service Club? 
Nope! Registration is free and gets you access to lots of great (FREE) resources! 

2. What will our club do? 
Clubs must complete at least two service projects and fill out one survey per academic year in order to maintain their membership.

3. Does our club have to be based in a school?
No, your club doesn’t have to be based in a school, but we do require that your club be affiliated with an organization such as a community organization, volunteer center, school or faith-based setting. Your club can meet at their venue and be covered by their insurance. 


4. How often does our club need to meet?
That’s up to you! GenerationOn Service Clubs are designed to be flexible – there’s no one right way to organize them. You may want to meet weekly to make sure that everyone stays involved, even if you only complete projects once a month or a couple times a semester.

You may also decide to have a core group of members who meet more often and then have a few big projects or events where you invite larger numbers of people, instead of trying to get everyone to come to every meeting. Figure out what works best for your group!


5. Who should be in charge of the club?
GenerationOn Service Clubs are intended to be youth-led. In other words, the youth members should be the ones coming up with ideas, choosing projects and getting out there and taking action.

However, adults are pretty helpful to have on board! The club advisor should help the club members to choose feasible projects, help connect them with opportunities and resources, and provide guidance and support to the club.

You may also want to elect or appoint a few key positions in your club, or choose a leadership team. For example, it might make sense for you to choose one member to be in charge of uploading completed projects to your club's Service Tracker after each project.

6. How many projects do we need to do?
Clubs are required to complete a minimum of two projects per academic year in order to maintain their generationOn Service Club membership, but otherwise, it's up to you! The more involved your club is, the better. Check out the generationOn website regularly for ideas on new projects, campaigns and issues to get involved with.

Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want to spread yourselves too thin! Sometimes it might be more effective and rewarding to concentrate on a few big projects instead of trying to keep track of a ton of small projects. You should get a better feel for how much your club can reasonably take on after you complete your first couple projects.

7. I want to start a generationOn Club but I can’t find an adult advisor for the club. What should I do?
We do require that your generationOn Service Club have an adult advisor even though we expect the youth participants to take the lead. If you’re having trouble finding an advisor, try to think more broadly. Is there anyone at your school that you might approach? Maybe there’s a teacher, coach, guidance counselor or administrator who would be interested in helping out. You could also check with a nearby HandsOn Action Center for help finding an advisor.

Be sure to emphasize that it won’t be much work for your advisor, since they’re probably pretty busy already. Their role is to support the club and provide some ideas and guidance, but mostly just to be a resource for you – the youth leaders!

8. What if there’s already another type of service club at my school? Can I still start a generationOn Club?
You can definitely still start a club, but you should do some research first. Maybe it would make sense to have the existing club convert to being a generationOn club by registering on the website and gaining access to new resources instead of starting from scratch.

Or maybe you feel like the club that’s already in place doesn’t fit exactly with what you have in mind. In that case, start your own club and think about what you can do differently to make sure that you’re bringing something unique to the table.
