Food for animal friends!

Support your local animal shelter!

Description

You know that family pets are usually well fed, but what about homeless animals in shelters? Did you know that in a tough economy there are more animals in shelters and less money for food? Next time you buy food for your beloved pet, buy some for an animal in need! You’re already there at the store, throw in an extra can or bag in your cart.  A little goes a long way!

Project:

Set up a collection box at your local pet store or supermarket to collect donated food to bring to your local shelter.

Here's what you need:

  • A large box to collect food
  • Poster board
  • Photos of sheltered animals  {if possible, from your local shelter)
  • Arrange for transportation to deliver the collected food to the local shelter

Here’s what you’re doing:

  • Identify a local animal shelter in need of pet food.
  • Speak with your local pet store or grocery store manager to arrange for a pet food collection.
  • Also speak with your local animal shelter to see what their specific needs are (how many animals they have, specific food needs, etc.).
  • Once approvals have been received, create your collection box and sign. Make sure your box is large enough to hold the donated food.

Here’s How!

  1. Coordinate a time with the store and shelter to collect and drop off the pet food.
  2. Arrange with all members of your family to man the collection center and arrange delivery to the shelter.
  3. Younger family members can help decorate posters and collection boxes or help sort the donated food by pet type.
  4. Have fun and remember all the animals you are helping!

Reflection Questions:

How did your feelings about sheltered animals change?

How did this project impact the life of an animal?

How did this project impact your family?

What did you notice about the community’s reaction to your project?

Interesting Fact:

Each year in this country 8 to10 million lost and unwanted dogs and cats enter animal shelters.  Imagine the cost to feed and take care of all those animals!
